Willow Springs proved to be an excellent testbed for a rebooted foliage system that we’ve been working on for several months now. The variety of plants and grasses really put this system to the test and let us find the limits of the system as well as a balance between aesthetics and performance
I shared some of this info elsewhere, but folks here might appreciate some insight into this project if you didn’t happen to see it.
Willow Springs was a challenging yet fun project for our team. Due to the unique characteristics of the landscape, the track couldn’t have been recreated to the quality we wanted with our existing shaders. There’s just such variety there… sandy patches of ground, areas where there’s a bit more gravelly sand, some red clay, a variety of grasses, rocky bits, and soil that’s been eroded away. This really pushed our team to innovate and work with engineering to advance our rendering engine and tooling pipeline. While we’ve been using multi-material shaders for some time now (these let us blend one texture with another in an advanced depth-based way), we realized we needed twice as many layers to get an adequate appearance.
Willow also proved to be an excellent testbed for a rebooted foliage system that we’ve been working on for several months now. The variety of plants and grasses really put this system to the test and let us find the limits of the system as well as a balance between aesthetics and performance. Just like with the textures, the requirements of this track really demanded this new feature and improvement to do it justice, so we were happy to debut it here.
We have also been long dissatisfied with our off-track ground appearance, which is what we call the “terrain”. What I mean by that is the ground outside the track walls that you don’t drive on. We have tried new approaches over the last couple of seasons and made some incremental improvements, but nothing revolutionary. For Willow, getting nearby terrain and roads to blend in with the track, given that there are often not even walls, was really important. We put one of our most technical artists on the task and paired him up with a lead rendering engineer. They overhauled the whole process, from the modeling and texture application to the mapping and blending. What we ended up with is a shader that stands up to close scrutiny and gets us close to visual parity between the bits you drive on, and the bits you don’t. This will be great for camera placement, replays, and for the broadcast team, who will be able to show more of the scene than in the past.
Unrelated to Willow but also of interest when it comes to the upcoming June build: our tree implementation received a complete overhaul fixing significant lighting and shading issues present in the former model.
Our whole team contributed towards this result, from our multi-decade veterans to our amazing new hires who have brought so much energy to the company. This work will pay dividends at all new tracks going forward, and older tracks we revisit. There are also many more tooling, pipeline, and rendering improvements in the works for the future, including some near-term enhancements to the sky and horizon model that will be ready soon.
iRacing announced an official partnership with the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to bring a licensed FIA Formula 4 experience to iRacing!

Mike -. P10. The race took four hours and 45 minutes 19 cautions most of them happened in the last hundred laps Was involved in an early Caution, which took out Justin only had a minute and a half damage. At one point through the middle of the race, I cycled to the lead but pretty much ran top five. Was running really good near the end as high as third where the guy forced me to the grass which gave me over the incident limit so I had to do a drive-through penalty. The guy ended up wrecking the leader to win as well. What a loser. I told him don’t be proud of that win.
Rochette- P15 started super loose ended up short pitting twice and ended up 3 laps down with a 178 lap run eventually got it stable and ended up just a lal down
David – P wrecked out, self spin into inside wall, took no one with me and kept it from bouncing.
Mackenzie – p
Sunday Open
Rochette -DNF so started 3rd but leader blinked out right before GF so got to start the race, led some laps and car passed me and was right behind him as he slowed up in a corner got in his rear and wrecked us both. Ugghhhh
Greg – P8 Was Damaged by a guy that was acting like denny hamlin at gateway
David – P dumped on lap 2 “HE THOUGHT I WAS GIVING HIM THE LANE”
Sunday Fixed
Justin- p forgot to check my work tires. Dnf.
Wednesday Open: gateway
Mike- p 17 – had a good run going till about lab 30 and got sideswiped by a guy in over four minutes damage got most of it fixed. It was about 40 to go to my last of the tires. I kept getting involved in different incidents and just had to survive.
MacKenzie- P7 – started 10th, ran about 10 laps then on the caution my vr went funny and I was looking out the side of the car, I pulled to the side to stay out of the way and got sent to the back for driving onto pit road exit. On the restart the car that was supposed to pass me was no where to be seen so I got a black flag penalty and had to hold for 50 seconds, luckily a caution came out as I was doing that so I only went 2 laps down, fought my way back and started p6 on the gwc but couldnt do anything with it. The only x’s i got were 1x for off track when my vr went funny and a 4x when someone ran into me from behind while pacing
David – p13 mid pack car
Kyle P P4 after a long break and silently been doing a few races lately. I Had a YoYo race. Started outside pole and stayed there until about lap 30 and my tires were junk and nosed the outside wall and just fell back. After a mid race caution I pitted for tires and repairs. And just Went back and forth through the teens and 20’s after a final repair and new tires with about 20 to go I made my march to the front. After a late race caution with 12 to go I went in for my last set of tires and away I went. Restarted 8th and just didn’t let anyone get near me. Made some bold moves for position and was able to bring home a P4. Felt good to get a good NIS Finish as my last several races have been junk.
Thursday Open
Ellis -P got pole position. They did pretty quick on the short run. Made it to the second set of tires by the time they got old I was sliding around and spun myself down to the inner wall and smashed the left front hard and couldn’t steer it.
David – dn

Thank you to Tony Kanaan the team at Mclaren for inviting us to imagine what is possible and envision a day where we all share the same equipment across the highest levels of motorsport both in real life and in the sim. the wheel was not used on track…. YET!
Mike- p was involved in the first caution or I got spun by a guy and 30 seconds. Optional work my way back up to the front got 8X and two laps just buy barely touching cars on the front stretch with no incident Then wrecked out on lap 115 a blinker was completely gone for like half a lab. He came back briefly I stayed hi but it wasn’t enough. I got turned dumped and recked.
David – p10. Sped during green flag stop. Caution came out with with my tires 20 laps old and 1 lap down. Several times the caution came out in the middle of green flag stops, I kept having to wave around and race on older tires getting as low as 2 laps down or as high as lead lap. Finally with 40 to go, I take the wave around while in 8th place and get a caution to put me back even. The some of the most fun tight but not wrecking racing i’ve ever been in to survive for a lucky 10th. Several times I got squeezed into the wall, but managed not to bounce off of the wall and or wreck the squeezer.
Justin – P5, nothing went right in the beginning until the last half of the race. Lap down the entire time. Last 100 lap finally got on the lead lap just stayed out of trouble.

Hi Gents,
Firstly, I’m from the uk and i regularly listen to every week. Keep up the great work 👍🏻. I’m emailing as I wanted to add some context to some items you have discussed. I was supposed to email you after last weeks show but didn’t get round to it. However after listen to this weeks show you have mentioned something I was going to email you about. You was discussing MSG last week and how iracing should buy them out along with some more discussion about MSG and their Finacial status. When i listened to this I immediately thought of F1 Arcade. F1 Arcade are a big concern, they are looking at opening approx 30 locations across the world. They have been open in England London for a whilst now and are very successful. I recently listened to a podcast that I will link below that gave me some great insights into F1 Arcade. They are backed by Liberty media and are officially licensed by F1. Here’s the interesting part that segways into MSG. They do not use codemasters for their sim/game they use Rfactor 2 !!! As you mentioned they are opening in Boston and another one in England that in know about. If MSG fail this would have serious implications for F1 arcade and with Liberty media backing the project I don’t believe they would allow Rfactor 2 to fail. The rest of MSG they wouldn’t care for. On another note I am a iracing driver and iracing only. I have tried Rfactor 2 though and I must say it knocks the socks of iracing in physics and FFB, it is much better. Iracing really should buy Rfactor 2 I’ll link a video from Dave cam describing the differences between Rfactor 2 and iracing. Don’t get me wrong I’m still iracing all they way. However, this story will develop a lot more yet. Rfactor has too much importance to fail completely.
Kind regards

Mike -. P hadd a first good move forward to be out for the first eight laps and then got disconnected from the Internet. Came back six laps down.
Rochette P8 sucked at Qual. Put me in the middle of trashy wobbly cars that wanted to wreck in front of me and had no where to go. So with a 49 second meatball and almost 5 minutes optional i just plucked away and got it fixed and made a charge for the front. Just not enough time to get more
David – P 27 top split, running around 20th. Late race cautions start, working my way up. On last start, car in front of me wiggles, I go to outside to pass, then a car on out side either turns down or gets loose and causes me to turn left to avoid. In the process I hooked the first person that got loose. At that point I didn’t have time to lift. This person had a long argument with me. Think I should have lifted when they got loose in front of me coming to the white, and is wrong. Still respect the driver, but they want me to take 100 percent of the blame and are wrong, it was a mixed up hard racing and people wiggling situation.
Sunday Open
Rochette -P2 still sucked at qual. Almost same result as Friday with trashy drivers and smashing my nose on a spinning car but on just 30 seconds optional. Was fast on the long run. Restarted 3rd for the final gwc and got 2nd and probably could’ve got a dub if we had more laps but isn’t that always the case
Mackenzie –
David – P 29 caution when i was in great position, then everything that could go wrong did, had a guy bounce off wall and knock me off track, then spun out in restart stack up, then meat balled in 2nd restart stack up. Its just not a good year
Wednesday Open: Darlington
Mike- p5- had a good run going until I had video black out completely on me on the backstretch and I would come back maybe two seconds later luckily I didn’t wreck but lost a bunch of track position. It happened a few times, but wasn’t critical to the race. Just losing track position. Eventually it stopped and I started working my way forward, but got turned on the backstretch. The guidance drifted right up until the top lane. Once again, moving my way forward on the final runs I get up to the top five.
Tom D – p2
Tyler- P22nd. Ran my first ever NIS at the lady in Black. She was a major challenge no doubt. Many stripes on the car but finished with a 4x. Tagged wall off 2 hard and damaged the right front and had to put with 30 to go under green. Was running 15th when it happened. Fun racing with the team.
Official Series
Ellis–
Indycar at old Michigan P2 in hosted Chris McGuire my first race attempt after figuring my Internet.
GEN four at Talladega- p2 – ran the top 10 most of the race took the lead on 17 to go on the last run. I ended up in the top lane top 3 wide as we came down to the end of the last lap. I moved to the middle but the guy dodged out on the straight on barely got by me right at the end
Ran the very next race hunting for the win was leading w 10 to go it was 3 wide most of the race middle lane first car guy on bottom bobbles bumps me I save it but he then hits apron then wipes out whole field… finished 2nd to dead last
Sprint car at Concorde. Start a 12 out of 16 in the bottom split finished P6. Lots of heavy hitters in the top split strength of field about 4700 PJ Stergios in the room. My arms were aching
A car open at Darlington. Started 19th a bunch of early cautions half of a spit it out lap 20 the rest stayed out. We went green 35 laps. After that I ended up P4 at that point. Stayed in the top five and worked myself up to P2 with a restart with four to go. Got wrecked trying to take a second from third ended up P 14.
League / Hosted Races
MAJORS SERIES – Indy
David – p DNF, failed to complete knockout quali, so went 2nd split, ran well at first, had a car check up mid corner and I just taped them enough to make my car go sliding up and used up Fast repair, got lap back, and later self spun trying to get back towards the front. Terrible showing
OBRL Cup
Brian -P28 Screwed up qualifying and started 34th. Had some good runs and was fighting for P5 with 8 to go when I was involved in an incident that hit the limit for me, and got DQ’d

Mike -. P1- qualified portly was able to drive up to the top five or I eventually put it under green in the Caution Canyon in Out. I was a lap down restarted P 24. From their work, my way clear to the lead and lead the last run actually, pulling away from the field gapping them as we came to the end of the race. Definitely earned that one career win number 93.
Rochette P forgot to take tires on the last run
Justin – p 19, qualified 17th took a lot of damage in the beginning, put me a lap down, stayed a lap down until the end. I just needed a caution. At the end I was the candidate for the lucky dog. Glad to see a teammate win
David – P 19, screwed by someone spinning there tires, was a top five car
Mackenzie – p5
Saturday Fix
Justin-P2, Qualified 10. I was on the wrong end of a green flag pit stop caution came out. Went a lap down fought for the lucky dog and got it 30 laps to go started on the tail end of the line drove her all the way in 2nd. Got within the leader .5 second 5 laps to go and just ran out of tire i could taste that one.
Sunday Open
Donnie – P8
David – P 16 top split
Sunday Fixed
Mike – p had an early Caution but after that ran from 18th all the way up to second in 44 laps on a pitstop, I had unsafe pit entrance and went to labs down Around half way, I got dumped by a guy divebombing. Four minutes damage the stayed in the race got one lucky dog in heat up finishing P 13.
Justin- p32, started 27th i was in the top 10 by half way to go and simple as this i got hooked down the straight junked my car. I was disapointed
Wednesday Open: Kansas
Mike- p18 – finally made a good call. It had pretty good track position around seventh but got door by a guy and got meatball got back to 25th but was able to recover a little bit.
David – p14 Long Greens early, caution though during cycle forced wave around and bad track position. Though quickly got back on even tires. Then the late caution fest began, I didn’t survive one of them. But enough others didn’t either that dragged it home 14th.
Tyler- P Pinballd ! Finished 25th had a top 5 car easy.
Justin – P? – ran with Mike.
Thursday Open Ellis -P lost Internet briefly, and got disconnected from the server early in the race. P26

Dellara Dash at Phoenix P1. Let every lap and get some massive donuts at the end. What a great car.
Gen 4 at old Atlanta. Top split. coming to the initial green. Some guy is warming his tires and spins out which caused me to get rear ended not gonna be into the air did the green came out and they piled up and I put all but eight of us a lap down where the entire field had to take a wave around. Stay green after that fitting after the halfway point from P78 laps later a caution ended up staying out saving the last set for the next caution but it never came and I faded back to finish 12.
Sprint car at Milwaukee 26 cars. Started in the back. P17

Hello,
This is Jeremy Mauro from SM-Racing Products. We greatly appreciate you guys discussing our button box on episode 0375 “Natural A.I.”. We listened to what you had to say and made some changes! The newest version of our box (currently live on our website sm-racingproducts.com) is 35mm thinner (slightly above a 40% reduction). We updated our website to include a description of each of the switches and functions they are commonly used for in iRacing so there is no more guessing! We also changed the finish of the faceplate to have a carbon fiber look while retaining the custom text.
Thank you and feel free to share, Jeremy Mauro SM-RacingProducts@sm-racingproducts.com (785)-633-1576

Mike- p3- started 14th and methodically worked my way forward to run as high as P3. I think only two cars pass me the whole night, but I was even able to pass them back.

Mike -. P . 18 – lost Internet connection briefly and dropped from the server by the time I re-joined. I was four laps down. I was only able to get it back to three laps down finished P 18.
Greg- p21?
David – P 26, didn’t know I had gotten 16x, hit cars wrecking at the finish got dropped a lap

Tom-p19
Sunday Open
Donnie – P6, Q10
David – P15 To many some mistakes on my own, but lost a few spots and end cause a lap down driver who was mad dove bomb into a 3 wide
Wednesday Open: Talladega
Rochette -P19 racing felt different from plate racing in the past. Never seen the outside have such domance. I usually just hang out on the bottom but just kept getting my ass kicked. Even led a few laps than the outside just ran a ttain on my ass and went 1st to 18th on a straight away. Had a good run going on a white and front wrecked and just killed me before the checkered
Justin- P 13, started 2nd real clean race. Ran a solid race just need to work on the little things. Leaders just executed well.
Mike- p5- put it under green. We waited one lap after the leaders and they basically got a 10 second lead on us. By the end of it there was a three of them in a breakaway and so we were fighting for the fourth place that I finished fifth
McKenzie- p11, started pole was running great until i got caught up in a wreck and had 4 ½ minutes damage and couldn’t keep pace, fixed the damage and could keep up being only 2 laps down but then got caught in another wreck and got a black flag for too many incident points, ended up finishing p11 down 5 laps
David – p18 caught up in late wrecks, feel like a made a tactical mistake late and got stuck in the wrong lane loosing to much track position.
Kyle P
Tyler- P 20, lost the pack on my own simply getting a drink. Was the last car in the pack with teammates and just couldn’t get back. Extremely frustrating race as strategy bit the big one. Finished with a meatball across the line with a 8x caught up in a mosh pit after the white. I did have a great time racing with Justin and Mike. Wish we had more on that top line.
Thursday Open
Ellis -P Dave clean most of the rays ran in the top 5 to 10 at the lead with about 25 to go and we finally get our first caution with seven to go. I lead the next restart. Five to go I’m leading the bottom Lane two cars behind me. One car goes below the yellow he comes up. I go in front of him and he hooks playing and turned me down to the wall 11 minutes damage DNF.
Donnie – Q4, P20
Official Series
Ellis– Iro4 at rudskogen I got wrecked out in turn one lap one from behind then I couldn’t find it road so I raged quit Dallara dash at Michigan- wrecked out lap 2 Gen 4 Daytona. I was just riding in the front back and somebody pushed up into the wall and I got a piece of it 30 seconds required and 430 optional. I then lost the pack after the restart I saw the yellow come out I saw one guy sitting sideways on the track. I’m like I’m gonna go underneath him and go on by cause he was stopped but as I was approaching, he decided to go, and it looked like he was going to go high so I went low and then he suddenly went low and then I ran over him Gen. 4 at Daytona, took the lead with about 20 to go within command of the race on the bottom front lane. The guy behind me was trying to push and turn me and we wrecked the entire field. Was damaged, but able to stay on the lead lap, and with the carnage at the end, drive through the racks and finish P 13. Pick up cup at Phoenix start at 12 got to eight but faded to finish night pretty straightforward race. Gen 4 at California top split with several pros and many heavy hitters. Started 24th ended up 24th ravens highest bill that got wrecked at one point.
A Open Hall – p Ellis -p qp2- stay green and we had a green flag. Stop stayed in the top five the top 10 but eventually cautions restarting third was 16 to go. I was on the bottom and got totally shuffled back to 17 another gosh later on back up to the ninth start with eight to go. Get to the leave pretty quickly and kept it through the first Greenway checker on the final restart on my first car on the outside coming. The guy third on the bottom pulls up in front of me. He’s too slow we rock the field I finish P 13.
Mackenzie
B fixed – p15 started 2nd and was running well but had guys trying to go 3 wide in the first 5 laps and got turned and never recovered from it

It’s been two full seasons since Bobby Zalenski’s been a winner at any road course, but in the series’ inaugural Monza visit, Zalenski was untouchable, leading all 30 laps from the pole position en route to his second victory in a row on the year.
Zalenski made zero mistakes. He pulled away early from Leahy and the rest of the field, waited as long as possible to pit, executed a perfect pit cycle and maintained the gap through every lap.

The Sim Racing Garage Reviews Moza Racing’s HGP Shifter
Fit and Finish was great, you have to have the software running in the background all the time which is a bit annoying… feels solid but a hint of shaft flex during aggresive driving… No sequential function…
Gomex Sim Racing reveals their new ‘entry level’ sim racing gormuls wheel
Jonathan Giakonoski Looks great and what I’d expect from GSI ~Buuuuuut~ The dual clutch option is uncomfortably close in price to the GRID MPX which has much more functionality, telemetry-driven RGB, and is also their “entry level” (lol). And that’s not even accounting for when their pre-order price was the same as this. The functionality is just a little bit more than a Polsimer, which is a true entry level wheel at a true entry level price that doesn’t feel particularly entry level in hand. This absolutely deserves to cost more, but not two times more. Not sure who this is priced for–brand loyalists aren’t looking for an entry level wheel, and it’s only a dub fifty more to upgrade from this to a forever-wheel.

The Most Realistic Sim Racing Wheel Settings
Daniel Morad gives settings for the most realistic settings for Sim Racing
DR Orzy in Discord: “The way he does it is exactly how I have been running it with 100% in Truedrive and then just dial it in sim (from there) with the Wheel Force. Ive heard some people do it the other way and I think they are missing out on the fidelity and everything the wheel base can give you if you turn it down in the wheelbase software.”
Mike – “Yeah I am doing the same as Daniel and Dr Orzy….. Always running at 100% force in the wheel software, then run a couple of laps, F9, hit the AUTO, button, run a few laps after Auto to see what we got at full strength… Then determine if I am going to leave it there, or back it down, just grab the number and bump it up 10 to 20 to lighten up the FFB to a comfort point… Some car track combo’s I will run it where Auto put it’s and pretend I got the popeye arms…. It is a great video especially if you want to dig into the actual wheel settings and learn what each slider does in the TrueDrive software”
The GuelTek P1 3.0 cockpit features rock solid carbon steel construction on the chassis, a wide shoulder racing seat with thick padding, adjustable seat mounting, adjustable pedal plate & wheel deck plate.

Justin- P 17 rough race pitted lap 120 put me in the back then just got beat up.
Mike- p got hit at one point and had to go to the back ended up hitting that boy which was 1/3 of the way through the race worked my way forward and took the lead with 74 to go. Was able to hold them off all the way to the end with short run into green white checkers by 92nd career wins.

Thursday Open Ellis -P well did the same strategy where I pitted at the third Waymark but this race I was involved in a lot more different incidents that were really not my doing but by 50 to go I got the drive-through penalty then make things worse I got disconnected from the server for a loss of connection for the first time since I got my new ISP.
Official Series
Ellis–
Indy pro 2000 at road America. Couldn’t get a cue lap in because I didn’t have the force feedback set right I had it way too low, which intern allowed me to turn the wheel more than I normally should once I got the force feedback, right? It really prevents me from turning the wheel too much physically because my muscles aren’t strong enough kind of thing. Went from 12 to 8 on the first lap but got wrecked out on lap. Six from behind a guy was young drafting catching me and as we approach turn one and I go to break he does plows right in full speed.
Gen 4 at Daytona I missed a big caution early on by driving Low and Missing it, that put me in the top 10 got to the lead with 20 to go before the Caution came out I got to the lead after the restart, but then got wrecked and sent down through the grass, but fell clear to the back and had three minutes damage. Somehow someway made it back to finish P 11 really fun racing. I ran force feedback at 100% and boy what an impressive example of this wheelbase cockpit and seat. It don’t get no rougher than that. I was just hanging on.
Ran again it stayed green pretty much until the leader got turned in the High Lane and wrecked the Field nine minutes damage I limp it home P 19
Sprint Car at Southern National – p11 – 30 cars showed up two splits I was bottom split – ran around tenth – caused 2 cautions spinning on my own off 4 – really tough car…
League / Hosted Races
OBRL Cup
Brian -P7 Bristol Dirt Ran incident free which allowed me to move from starting position of 14 the 7th. Had a couple of good racing moments, but for the most part just tried to keep from wrecking.
