Why iRacing can now afford to be choosy [Brian]

An article in Racer.com, the online motorsports magazine describes how successful iRacing’s business model has become, essentially re-inventing how the model is done. Where as before, software companies would pay large amounts of money up front for licensing rights, to iRacing becoming a marketing tool for manufacturers to iRacing “super users” (die-hard iRacing fans) as described by Steve Myers. In the beginning iRacing had to plead their case and business model to manufacturers to join the sim. But now, they get more requests from manufacturers to join than they can accept because of it’s success, and as such can now be choosey as to whom they bring into the sim.

Motorsport Games Confirms NASCAR 21 [Hall]

IGN reported that Motorsport Games has confirmed a new NASCAR game will be ready for 2021, and it will not be a continuation of the Heat series. NASCAR 21 will represent a fresh start for NASCAR simulations from Motorsport Games and will be powered by Unreal Engine and Studio 397’s acclaimed rFactor 2 physics

Steering Ratio is Now What? [Greg]

Steve Rada in the forums asked ,”I was wanting to find out, how does someone go about on finding what is consider the steering ratio on the Next Gen, and what do we have to do to get it where the current gen is, being 12.1,14.1, & 16.1.” Staff Member Matt Holden replied that, “The NextGen uses a completely different steering system than the other cars, so the steering pinion controls the steering speed instead of the power steering box. Like Vern said it doesn’t correlate directly to the steering box ratio, higher pinion numbers produce more movement for a given steering input and would be like running a lower-ratio, faster steering box.”

Starting on July 31th, the qualifying series for the 2022 Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup gets underway with a new qualification format that is open for all iRacing members. Fri open: Atlanta

  • Ellis –  pdnf – Got wrecked going straight down the back strectch – got hooked into wall hard, no caution, steering is 90 degrees turned – soldier on as I am getting lapped i brush the wall a bit trying to stay high and the leader runs over me p i am then toast up against the wall smoking and 5 cars later someone else piles in
    • Josh quote after watching replays – “You got hooked on back stretch. That’s not on you. And you stayed right to wall with blown motor.
    • The hitting wall while being lapped, sucks but we have all been in that situation and it wasn’t intentional and you were struggling with damage.”
  • Greg – PWas running p5 till I noticed I didn’t have enough fuel for some reason on a 55 lap run. Must have not filled it for some reason. P21 finish
  • Hall = P 14, green to green, shuffled back to 30ths early on from evading a near wreck, was 25th when pit cycles started, neted up to 14th, some of the 20 lap fresher tires behind me stopped gaining on me after their laps were 20 laps old.
  • Rochette Pdnf got caught in other peoples BS. Forgot to mention I am now proclaiming myself the 2021 Tifosi NiS Road Kingahhhhh

    • Stephen – p1 
    • Rochette- P2 Stayed clean and made it a Tifosi 1-2 with Stephen Louallen. If it was Chris Scales leading i would’ve wreck his ass “smiley face” 
    • Kyle – P P-3 Started P-8. Had to deal with some early race cautions and about lap 50 Was the last restart and run top 3. Took the lead and held it for 16 laps until i pitted with 23 to and then raced my way up to a P-3 and was running down the leader. If i had another 5 laps i would of regained the lead as i had 25 lap fresher tires then the leader but just ran out of laps.
    • Hall – p 9.  1 caution
  • Sunday fixed 
    • Mike -pwrecked out – missed the first 3 cautions but didnt miss the 4th – totally wrecked out couldnt miss it
    • Greg – P13 wrecked on gwc going for the win
    • Brian – P What more could go wrong…

    • Tyler. P-6 Started in the back and just worked my way up thru the field.

    • Hall -p wrecked, failed to avoid a wreck, a lot of cautions, one of em got me
    • Ellis – DNF – Went to the outside of a guy on the inside down the straight and he came up and pushed us both to the wall – not clear
    • Kyle = dnf blew pu after stacking up at start

  • Thurs Open  
    • Hall – p 10  Got caught up in a late wreck, but more other cars got worse damage, plus the EOL bug, higher position than I probably would have gotten.
    • Ellis – p.

Rochette P #88 for the keys. I suck at Land of the Hamsters dodged some wrecks and finished 8th…. Rest in Heaven Gary

    • Hall  P 1!  Finally after being so close all week.  Took some luck, was gonna finish 2nd by stretching fuel cause the guy that was gonna win caught me on the fresh, but caution comes out for a 2 lap, restart p9, finish p1.
    • Kyle P P-UNO Started P-9 and kept myself out of a handful of wrecks and was able to maintain myself in the top 5. Late race caution allowed me to to gain 2 spots on pit road and then i just got myself to the lead after the restart and just ran away with the lead. Led 14 laps and then took the checkered flag. It sure does feel great to win again after a long dry streak.
  • PDS Euro Sprint

Hall – p1 First attempt at Monza, the alien got a speeding penalty

Pro Invitational Discontinued

Adam Stern announced on his Twitter page that Nascar is informing the industry that they are discontinuing the iRacing Pro Invitational Series for the remainder if 2021, though it could return in the future special events.

NextGen- Experimental We Hope

When referring to racing in the Next Gen Car, Tyler C Green asked in the forums, “What is going on with this car? Getting into the Next Gen Ford results in almost ZERO force feedback with settings turned way way up (in sim FFB set up to 10.0). Power steering exists on plenty of other iRacing cars and not a single one of them have such a numb disconnected type of feedback.” Others echoed the sentiment until staffer Matt Holden chimed in that, “NASCAR wants a low amount of steering weight for the NextGen cars and we built the cars to reflect the change. I believe what we have is slightly stronger than the real car, but it is in line with the data and requirements for the car.

  • Ellis –  p9 – qualified p5 and lots of issues one guy doored me to the wall hard had 1 minute damage – was 13th going into stops was 7th coming out – had lots of self spins and drive thru for 17x, but I will take a top ten on a road course hell ya!!!

    • Hall -p 22,  lost the coin toss on cautions.  Great long run set, went for 1 stop strat, caution came in the 10 lap window that I was down a lap.  Had to start 28th with 8 lap older tires.  Passed all the other guys on old tires and even caught some guys with newer tires to crawl to 22nd.  Racing was really clean with just one self spin.
    • Kyle – P-19 Started P-13 and snuck my way to the top 5. Lap 33 i took the lead on a restart and held the lead for 53 laps. Pitted with a +4.0 Second lead. After pit cycle I was working my way back up the field and got taken out by a lap down car who bounced off turn 1 wall and that set me back 10 laps. Got a wave around and a lucky dog and was able to squeak out a P-19.
    • Ellis – p24 – wrecked on my own about halfway – 1 minute 30 damage – never recovered – self spun a few times….
    • Rochette – P9

Adam Stern formally announced that Nascar is expanding their relationship with iRacing which goes from being a licensee to now being the official simulation partner of the Nascar sanctioning body.   • Rochette P15 nothing to write home about except, how the dogs and the misses doing and man its been raining like a mofo and stop your whining Northwest about the heat thats what AC is for

    • Kyle – P Started P8 went 2 laps down for repairs after getting caught up in a wreck. Finished with a P16
  • Sunday fixed 
    • Brian – P22 Had a great run going with Tyler when i was caught in a wreck by a netcode accident
    • Tyler. P- 4. Finally a top 5 in NIS. Ran a great race following BMac and dodged a few cautions. Restarted 2nd for 3 GWC only for the leader to be “blinking” on restarts. Screwed myself blowing the entry in 3 and brushed the wall at exit of 3 coming to get the white. Ended up 4th. 

Race: Road America

Kyle – P Started P18 lap 1 turn 1 three other cars went in around me and 2 of them over drove the corner and the other driver checked up and moved over right in front of me and damaged the nose. Was able to stay near the top 10 most of the race. Coming to 1 to go i over drove the last corner and had to serve a drive thru. Came out 2.5 seconds behind 8th for the last lap and was able to run him down to finish 0.2 seconds behind 8th.   • Ellis – pdnf – Started 20th got to 13th by end of lap 1 – went off once on lap 3 and fell back a bit – next a big wreck in the narrow part had cars going every direction and I got doored to the wall going left –  engine blew 3 laps later…
    • Rochette – PSqueeked out a 10th 10 laps in Battling for  spot and over drove a corner right in the tires, had to pit but got my 28 seconds damage fixed and was on fuel saving mode since it was 2 laps out of my window. Was 11th coming to the checker but magically got 10th. Top 10 course streak continues But…… (see Kyle) 
    • Kyle = with best finish of the night with a 9th

    Nascar has announced the introduction of the all-new eNASCAR International series that will place a spotlight on the stars of its three international racing divisions across Europe, Mexico and Canada. The new series – entitled “the eNASCAR International iRacing Series” – will consist of three races at historic facilities – Brands Hatch, Circuit of the Americas, and the Daytona Road Course. The field will contain an even mix of drivers from the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, NASCAR Peak Mexico Series, NASCAR Pinty’s Series, and select drivers from NASCAR’s 2021 Drive for Diversity class.

    Cup car has strange off throttle (engine braking) [Tony]

    James Vining asked the community in the forums if anyone else has noticed that the Cup car has strange off throttle (engine braking). Go hit throttle quickly to say 7K and let off and notice how long it takes to drop back to Idle. Staff member Matt Holden said that it’s something they will look at.

    RIP Old Forums [Brian]

    Several of the iRacing Forum regulars bid a fond farewell to the now retired old style forums, including a well written reflection from Derek Speare who highlight the innovations of the sim racing hardware birthed in the forum, everything from direct drive wheels to wind simulators.

    It’s my opinion that the iRacing hardware forums was the real birthplace of sim racing hardware innovation. Two examples come to mind: The direct drive wheel, courtesy of Philip Jensen van Rensburg aka “Beano” and hydraulic pedals from Emery Emond (taking Sam Maxwell’s air pedals to the next iteration).

    We’ve seen hundreds of other ideas along the way like Richard Macnaughtan’s Wind Sim and the several virtual gauge/data screens. Three screen racing was really perfected as well. I think that if it is some piece of hardware that can be remotely used for sim racing someone has used it for sim racing!

    The iRacing Hardware forums have become a veritable repository of the most complete body of knowledge for sim racing. It’s a shame it has to close now. The new forums are a different experience, perhaps with a steep learning curve for some folks who are very accustomed to how things have been done. Hopefully the experience will be as valuable as this one has been for the many, many years it has been operating.

      • Mike -pdnf – wrecked out lap 1 got snap loose into 2 and killed it
      • Brian – P SMH wreck at the drop of the green.  
      • Tyler. P-Meatball in 28th. Ran well just around 10th the whole race. Late restart with 30 to go and spun on exit of 2 on cold tires. Spent about a full 30seconda flipping in the air as I over corrected it twice.

      • Ellis – p19 – Was the first caution – I was thinking I dont trust this guy, he has wrecked me before, he is careless, and I let him go by on the inside, we got to the corner, coming off he used up all of his lane and mine and pushed me to the wall.     Nashville SS Grip

    There was a discussion in the forums regarding the new Nashville Super Speedway and the amount of grip. Some speculated that it’s the cup car package, others the setups. Staffer Christian Challiner said, “It’s none of the above. What you’re currently driving on is essentially our ‘defaults’ for surface parameters.” What you will have post-patch will be the specific parameters for that concrete surface. Jared Carr asked, “Then why was it released with the “wrong” track data if the data was available before release?” To which Challinger replied, “There was an error and It will be resolved in a patch next week as has already been mentioned. For what it’s worth, it’s impossible for a tester to spot/know this.”

    Project K9 200

    A special thank you to all of those who help make the Project K9 200 a big success! We had 34 drivers show up and the multiclass racing was a blast. Bob Fellenbaum and Dwayne Mcarthur won the Cup and Xfinity Poles. Team Tifosi lead the majority of the cup side while Eric Essary and Dwayne were hunting each other down on the Xfinity Side. We saw some long green flag runs in which Greg Heckus took home the checkered for Cup and Eric Essary nabbed the Xfinity prize. Eric also grabbed the Old Bastards Racing League & the Metro Ford Chicago clean driver awards. Grabbing both those awards on the Cup side was David Hall, and both David and Eric generously donated their winnings to Project K-9 Hero along with both pole winners.     RTP Exhibition at Knoxville June 24th

    Tyler D. Hudson Posts that on June 24th, iRacing will be doing an exhibition race at Knoxville. All series parameters will be set up exactly as Round 2, EXCEPT, this will be a fixed setup event. This will be an official series and count toward iR and SR. The purpose of this is to completely test the functionality to have a roster based series go off snake split into two races. It is extremely important that we get at least 36 participants so that the races will split in order to test this properly. If you’re a driver in round 2, please participate in this event.

    New Blimp Tools – Game Changer

    For those who love to do video editing within the sim, or just watching cool replays there is a new blimp tool.

    I have no idea what blimp radius is but that looks amazing. The blimp circles around at a set distance, you can change this distance, but before you could only go down to 100, which was still very large. This allows you to take it down to 1, so you can fine tune shots like those for corners. Essentially you can now make decent attempts at boom crane shots, or low drone shots, without the camera going clear on the other side of the track to get back around.     8 Cars in Certain Series

    87 Update Thoughts

    Michigan shows massive tire wear in just a few laps, Charlotte looks balanced. Going to require a lot of testing and practicing to see how good or bad this update is. Dale described this era as searching for front turn. I feel that now. Its pretty tight, feels like a big potato street stock that will never turn, and once you get it turned, you break the rear tires loose

    No more snap loose. Car is very fun to drive still though, actually requires braking unlike the contemporary cars. I might actually enjoy Daytona this time around! You can tell there is more downforce but not an egregious amount.
    Car is slower overall (gets tight off if you get on the gas too early), but lap times are close to the real-life values (I looked up pole speeds on Racing Reference).
    Tire conservation is going to be extremely important. You have to crank the wheel 90 degrees to the left (even on 12:1), like what’s shown in the in-car videos from the time period.
    Big fan so far. I think people are going to like the changes a lot.

    Special Events: What to Expect for Joining & Registering

    Francisco Scaramuzza Posts in the forums of what to expect when joining and registering for special events.

    We’ve implemented a change to the registration processing that we expect will help this process. Once the main registration period closes, and splits are being made prior to events beginning to launch, the scheduler is simply not going to allow any additional members to register until all sessions have finished launching. This will give the scheduler unimpeded time to do its thing. Those who try to register during this time period will not be allowed to register. They’ll receive a new error message that says, “Please wait, registration is temporarily closed while the session launches. You will be able to register once the session has fully started.”. For members that registered for the session before the main registration period closed, nothing has changed. They will receive a “Join” button in the iRacing UI or a “Race” button on the Membersite or if they are in a Practice session, just as they normally would. This message will only be presented to members attempting to register to enter the session after the main registration window has closed and before the session has launched.

    Additionally, we’ve identified and made improvements to data locking strategies and made physical changes to data structures to spread out data and reduce contention. We plan to continue making additional behind-the-scenes improvements, especially after we have more data from another special event.

    As a reminder, please note that team registration and the declaring of drivers must still be completed entirely before the normal registration period ends.

    iRacer Gary Corbett Go Fund Me

    Our wonderfully kind and talented friend, keyboardist, Gary Corbett needs your help and support.

    He’s been struggling with health issues, and now we’ve heard that Gary has a very aggressive form of cancer- lung cancer that has metastasized to his brain & hip. ( The good news is IT IS TREATABLE)

    As you know, most musicians don’t have health insurance, or when they do, it’s not that great. Due to the costs of treatment, Gary is on the verge of losing his home, and the medical bills are piling up alongside all the other bills.

    He has completed a series of radiation therapy, is undergoing an aggressive series of chemo and immunotherapy, and is slated to start cognitive and occupational therapy soon.

    Gary and his wife Lenora are desperate. They cannot afford to pay for his treatment and stopping it is not an option.

    Here’s a little about Gary you may not know:

    Gary Corbett is best known for his work as the keyboardist for rock superstars KISS, and Cinderella.

    He co-wrote the iconic #1 hit She Bop for Cyndi Lauper.

    He has also played with Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Molly Hatchett, and Ronnie Wood.

    He has conducted a live orchestra with pop idol Debbie Gibson, played piano with Whitney Houston, Lou Reed, and Taylor Dayne, played keyboards and produced reggae legends Damian and Stephen Marley, and has been seen most recently performing with Ted Nugent’s original vocalist Derek St. Holmes.

    He is an award-winning, multi-platinum songwriter, keyboardist, performer & producer.

    His Emmy comes from a documentary he did pro bono work about and called Hunger In America.

    He has done USO tours- even getting to fly in a fighter jet in South Korea, made wishes come true with the Make a Wish Foundation, and played at countless fundraisers. Gary never says no to anyone in need.

      • Ellis – pWrecked Out – Used my keyboard to shift, no issues with that really, unchecked my tires because I was thinking about stopping on 1st caution but didn’t, so my 1st gf stop, it didn’t give me tires so i stayed and got them. Eventually i finally caught a caution restarted 11th got up to 3rd but cycled back to 11th before getting killed in a big wreck I could not miss – it blew up a bit later after another wreck i couldn’t miss

    1987 Cup Car Update

    Dale Earnhardt Jr was the driving force in a overhaul of the 1987 Nascar Series Cars. In his post he explained bow he reached out to Bobby Labonte at first, because of his experience in the real life counterpart and asked his opinions compared to iRacing’s version. He opinion was similar to Dale’s that it was way too loose. Next he reached out to several crew chiefs from the day and asked for their input as well. All of which influenced the new update released in the new build this week.

    Dallara iRacing Grand Prix Championship

    Greg West announced on the forums the introduction of the Dallara iRacing Grand Prix championship to begin this fall. Qualifying rounds for the series will begin on July 8th, as Super Sessions staged within the existing Dallara Formula iR series.       iRacing IROC Challenge Series Season 3

           Brian M- P F’d up.  Was running pretty steady in 6th or better for much of the race.  Near the end of the second stage there was a caution.  I stayed out on old tires and moved into 2nd under yellow.  On the restart, spun the hell out of my old tires wrecking myself (deserved) and several others (Not Deserved).  Too worried about getting a good launch, and neglected staying safe.  Sorry to all involved, Felt like a moron.

      Some in the forums have started a thread asking if iRacing would offer AI racing in the car.       Enjoy the show. With week 13 coming up I want to do something fun with my participation credits. I really enjoyed the tour mods at watkins glen this past season and there were some great discussions about how it would do on free tracks. So I came up with 3 races Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Monday is the Charlotte Roval ,Tuesday is Laguna Seca, and Wednesday is the Phoenix Road Course.       • Ellis –  – p14 – no practice had wrong wheel settings – the pit under gf had my tires unchecked – never recovered from it – hit the wall a thousand times but finished….

        • Hall = P out early, got loose my self running the high line, bounced off the wall several times doing my best to not collect anyone.  Car would still run, but with a good finish already no limping around for 400 laps
        • Rochette P4 what a race. Definitely 1 of the fastest cars til my black cloud covered the sun and was wrecked 3 times and 2 of the 3 was nose damage. 
        • Steve – pwreckedRunning  5th gaining on leader. Then got wrecked by a lapped car on new tires when I was side by side with the 4th place guy. On lap  317.
        • Sunday Open
          • Kyle – P P-6 Started back in P-17 and worked my way up to the top 5 within the first 18 laps. Ran a consistent top 10 through the race and even led 14. Gave up the lead for the first pit cycle. Stayed on the lead lap until after half way. Started losing time to the leader and after a few pit cycles ended up a lap down. After a few small brushes with the wall i was falling off pace and pit for the second to last cycle for tires, fuel and repairs. I fell 2 laps down and started to drive my way through the field and stayed out as long as i could for the final pit cycle and was able to catch a caution and only be 1 lap down. After pits i was sitting P-5 but smacked the wall out of 4 and started to lose time to the field and fell back to hold a P-6. Big shout out to Paul Donnelly2 for his outstanding performance. He led 249 laps and was untouchable.

Worse finish at a nis road has been 7th ran 5th 98% race where my i was dodging and praying to baby jebus that i dont get wrecked by Bottom splits very best. And i did with 0x!!!!!!!!!! That should be worth top split points alone. Im 1 and done at this stupid track on the the Project K9 Hero 200 next friday night 9pm eastern

        Why the Change at COTA?

        Eric Hudec posted in regard to the COTA track surface updates that “Ostensibly the track has gained grip. We change our macro surface roughness parameters to be more appropriate to the actual surface. It’s a relatively new asphalt showing little ageing and, really, could make use of driving a bit ‘younger’ than our baseline values provided. “

          • Rochette – P7 stayed clean helluva battle last 2 laps for p7 with leader right behind us

          1. Tom D – P1 – qualified 9th.  Dint not have get off speed (guess that’s been my season).  Was able to work myself to the lead just before lap 50 when the top 5 guys decided to make a 3 pit stop race.  My long run speed was great, so I decided to do a 2 stopper.  I was able to lap the field and take home my 2nd win of the season.

        Heavy Discussion on the Package [Mike]

        Michael Gest asked in poll in the forums if the Aero Push in the cup and trucks is too much.

        We have had aero push back in iRacing for the NASCAR cup car and truck for the last 6 months or so now. I have raced most weeks, and from what I can tell, there is zero racing going on after lap 15 of any run at any track. Unless you really destroy your tires, the leader is untouchable, even if they are .2-.3 slower in real pace.

        There just seems to be a disconnect in the ability to make moves after a certain point in the run compared to real life, especially as the field begins to spread out.

        • Ellis –  – P 18-kept hitting center of 3 and 4 to get my stripe and ended up w drive thru penalty after 17x – was running well still top ten, but wrecked
        • Hall = P wrecked on purpose,

        Rochette P17 stuck a lap down when a lapped car black flagged me

        • Adam- pKinda busy, Just write me down for a p9 Sunday in NIS and a B open win Saturday night with a 3 wide pass for the lead going into one
        • Hall – p wrecked

        Tom D – p12. Did not run well at the beginning of the race. Made a dumb mistake on pit road and lost 2 laps. Worked my way back on lead lap

        • Sunday fixed 
          • Mike -p5 – It was tight on the long runs lots of stripes in the middle of 3 and 4 – had a lucky caution after missing pit road on a gf stop and turned but the car didnt turn went right back on track – next time around i was pulling in and some guy did the same thing but actually wrecked really hard going straight into wall at 4…
          • Brian – Pdns needed a firmware update to stop some headset glitches
          • Kyle – P20
        • Wed Open:
          • Hall – Top Split p14 – set showed loose into corner that didn’t show in practice.  Was out to lunch and 2 laps down struggling to keep car on track.  Climbed back up with adjustments, others mistakes, and very lucky cautions.

          • Ellis – p7 – really loose – ran as high as third was not great on the longer runs  – survived basically
          • Rochette – Pwrecked self spun for the 1st time in along time ended my day when a car was letting me by and wrecked me
