Heavy Discussion on the Package [Mike]

Michael Gest asked in poll in the forums if the Aero Push in the cup and trucks is too much.

We have had aero push back in iRacing for the NASCAR cup car and truck for the last 6 months or so now. I have raced most weeks, and from what I can tell, there is zero racing going on after lap 15 of any run at any track. Unless you really destroy your tires, the leader is untouchable, even if they are .2-.3 slower in real pace.

There just seems to be a disconnect in the ability to make moves after a certain point in the run compared to real life, especially as the field begins to spread out.

Also one of the biggest things was to create quiet pedals with no need to lubricate all the time, Also the end stops are big part of the silent operation, so those got some attention as well.

NASCAR iRacing Series

Fri open: Kansas

  • Ellis –  – P wrecked out lap 3 i go high on a guy and he doesnt give any room and we clip and get destroyed – down 200 RPM about to blow up – i parked it.
  • Hall = P4 –  frustrated with long run of set most race, late caution allowed me to steal a lot of spots.  The caution was actually caused by a blown tire right in front of the dominant leader
  • Rochette P12 dont remember must’ve sucked
  • Brian- P27 Started mid pack, moved into the top 10, Didn’t have much for the leaders, but didn’t matter because got caught up in someone else’s crap.  33 minutes required
  • Sunday fixed
  • Mike -p17 – ran pretty good anywhere from 8th to 20th – about 10 to go under caution this guy two cars up literally slams on his brakes and we all pile in…
  • Brian – P12  Felt more competitive in the fixed, but not great on short runs.  Lot’s of early cautions. Had one decent long run and made my way up to 3rd. Got caught up in a wreck on a GWC and dropped to 12th
  • Stephen – p4
  • Tyler – P4 – pumped after my first top 5 in NIS. Also my first start in the A car at Kansas. Fun race stayed high the whole time. Even managed to have a 0X.
  • Hall – p15 Top split, no caution after lap 17.    Did have minor rear from a car behind me not seeing the wreck even as I called it out.

Race: Darlington

  • Wed Open:
    • Hall – p wrecked out, combination of a guy everyone knows is the new “wreckless” guy, and cautions not coming out leading to another guy hitting me as the yellow didn’t come out till I stopped sliding backwards in the middle of the track.  FIX THE DAMN CAUTIONS
    • Kyle – P? I dont wanna talk about it. DQ 2 laps to go
    • Tom D. P dns?
    • Ellis – p 6 – was running 2nd w last gf stops, then caution – had to take a wave around and could only get back to 5th then slipped to 6th. Tim Phillips won his first NiS race ever after 7 years of NiS…
  • Thurs Open
    • Ellis – p..dnf – got doored and was frustrated and put it in the wall a lap later

Rochette P16 what a cluster Fook got a drive thru and engine blew a lap after

League / Hosted Races

  • FastTrack Sim Racing League – kansas
    • Mike- p 3- ended up missing the start as I almost forgot to change sets – was dead last half lap down – gf stops eventually started i stayed out – with only 1 lap left of fuel, caution – now i have one more set than most others – got a late caution, me and two others took tires blew by the rest… Might of been able to win but wasnt aggressive enough (Alan P wins, Wes Hurd loaded a q set…)
    • Moorley – p5 – had it totally won but some guy parked it on the grass to tow and it brought out the caution… (This is the thing about having teammates in the same race, when you split strategy, it usually means one of you ends up losing….)
    • Tom – p14 – hit wall on last lap ended last car on lead lap
    • we are recruiting.

NASCAR iRacing Series

Fri open: Talladega

  • Ellis –  – P2. Had it won too- Topped off on last caution had to save fuel like crazy was leading on the white with 2nd right behind me he had a bubble more of fuel than me and went right on by. I was a sitting duck he was sitting in second and could pass me it will because there’s only two of us I didn’t really consider that. What a week though first fourth and second.
  • Hall = P6 – started on pole.  Last caution hurt my restart and p2 is a horrible place on restarts.  Dropped to 12th, with 2 to got, got back to 6th.
  • Rochette P Man i f*****d myself hardcore tonight didn’t brake hard enough sped on entry on a green flag stop while leading first 35. Did get a caution but started in the back where no one could keep up and had a car on my outside force me down to the apron in a turn and lost the draft P23
  • Bobby – once again, out front for a good amount of the race with nothing to show. leading, then dumped im trioval, so dam close to that win
  • Brian- P22 Started on pole.  Outside line got ahead of me and settled in 2nd for first ⅓ of the race.  After Caution restarted outside p2 and shuffled back to 10th putting me in the danger zone for wrecks which came late in the race and collected me.
  • Adam – p11?

Mike -p7 – got clipped a bit and 30 seconds damage – made my way back up to 2nd but got freight trained back to 9th – then finished p7

Race:  Kansas

  • Wed Open:
    • Hall – p20 top split, salvaged a decent finish after a losing the car and hitting the wall while chatting to a viewer.
    • Tom D. P3. Qualified p7. Ran up front till first pit stop. Dumb me, speeding. Than worked my way back to a top when I got bumped into the front stretch grass.  Fell back to 27th.  Worked my way all the way to the lead with 20 or so to go, but just ran the tires off of it.  I’ll take a top 5 after a couple super bad weeks
  • Ellis – p28 – got wrecked by some guy on the bottom that got tight and came right up to me and slammed me in the wall – was 35th dead last, later got into another wreck that could not be missed –
  • Rochette – P7 set was loose on exit for me screw the winner as it was a guy with a 5k IR on his second account beating us poor low 2k guys up
  • Thurs Open
    • Ellis – p..8
    • Rochette P16 got tight hitting wall on exit of 4 only had 1 caution so couldnt catch up
    • Kyle – P-7 Started P-14 and got wrecked early and went 2 laps down and finally got enough lucky dogs to get back on the lead lap. Car was hurt but still decently fast. We ended up with 13 cautions which helped me a lot to save tires and slowly work my way to the front. Restarted P-9 on the last restart with 2 to go and kept my foot in it and picked up 2 more spots to finish with a P-7.

Official Series

  • A Open
    • Kyle P P3 Started in P4 ran top 5 for most of the race. Came down to a GWC in 4th and kept the Loud Pedal mashed all the way until the checker flag and came up .05 from getting P2.
    • Ellis – p3 trying to push david – Then p1!  – Was third on last lap got to leader and he was swerving a bit and so i hooked him – he was not happy –

    • Kyle – P P-7 started P-11 and had a good run until about halfway and couldnt keep the tires straight and fell back to the 20’s was able to work my way to a P-7 in the finally 10 laps.
  • Sunday fixed
  • Brian – P14 Got in a lot more trouble in this race.  People were just too aggressive with lots of cautions.  Accidentally used up my extra tires on lap 122. Held on to p14 with car #34
  • Tyler – P13. started dead last and kept the car clean for the most part. Most passes were done under caution or in the pits. Longest green run we had was about 35 laps with everyone struggling to pass and keep traction.

Race:  Tally

  • Wed Open:
    • Hall – p12, taken out buy a guy diving below the yellow line, luck on a GWC to get a lot of spots back
    • Tom D. P wrecked
    • Ellis – p.1 – Ran top 5, never passed anyone to the right side, basically slowly gained positions through pitting and pit strategy. Led the most laps all the way to end. Late caution for a GWC I didn’t want to see had me on fumes. Another GWC would ruin me but never came thanks to DB Bowman. Check his twitch at twitch.tv/dbbowman to see my win… I owe DB a case a beer big time as he did not challenge me for the win, but agreed to push me and finish 2nd….Class act  – Two wins in a row. Check out his twitch

Rochette – P10 helped Mike to the lead on a restart where he stayed and i fell back. Last restart cars in front wrecking killed my momentum with the lead pack

  • Thurs Open
    • Ellis – p. 4 – forgot to change out of the q set – so lost a lap taking tape off. Eventually got a lucky dog and worked my way back up – good fuel strategy put me up front near the end just had a bit of damage and couldnt pass at all…

Rochette P9 Got my annual Dega Pole, along with fastest lap and 14 led. Non caution wreck in front broke me away from the main pack and my 4 car line couldnt regain

Official Series

  • A Fixed
    • Ellis – p- 24 – couldn’t pass at all, ran 5th the whole race – then caution at end so gwc – guy starting third thinks he is going to let his bud in so he checks up and i run over him and we all wreck.
  • Kyle P – P1-Started P-11 Car 29 and ran top 10 until pit cycle and got up to P-5 and just waited my time until the last caution with 12 to go Was able to draft my way to 2nd and just rode there until the last lap and made the move to go to the high side and left the leader all alone and i caught the draft of a lapped car and had the help of the car behind me to make the pass coming to the Tri-Oval to secure the win on the last 300 yards of the race.

League / Hosted Races

  • FastTrack Sim Racing League
    • Mike- p11 – Was running better than that, but got caught w a yellow after my gf stop and ended up a lap down – no other lucky cautions so that is all I could get – Shout out to Brian for great spotting

Topics

Klingerman in RACERmag [Hall]

Parker Klingerman was featured in an article on RACERmag exploring the accessibility of sim racing and real world racing.

“It would be absolutely asinine to not encourage, embrace, and put all the effort behind sim racing. We have truly something special here, that no other sport has. No other sport has a virtual counterpart that connects so seamlessly between the real [and the sim]. How could we not embrace it and try to promote it? It’s just a no-brainer.”

“Because [racing] is so expensive, because it takes such a time-intensive amount to do anything, even to go race a go-kart it takes a lot of time and money,” he said. “But in sim racing we can allow thousands, if not millions, of people to experience motorsports and race at any one time, which is something that motorsports has never had.”

“We can do so much more and allow so many more people to access all this stuff if we just find a way to harness it in a better way and present it,” Kligerman said.

We would not have done the project if we could not put it up for sale! I expect it will be finished in late May in time for this event.

And this is a very different project than Monaco. The vast majority of the track is on the lake side of a park. Yes we are going to have to model some of the city but not as much as a track more centrally located in a city. When it is done it is going to be beautiful. The parks are going to be gorgeous and there will be an iconic shot at the start/finish line (if it does not change) with the fountain in the back.

NASCAR iRacing Series

  • Fri open: Vegas
    • Ellis –  – p  wrecked out. I ended up being the first caution when I spun my myself out after coming from 20th to eIghth. Not much damage came from 27th back up to 5th. Running fifth I’m going by Jonathan Dickert and he takes me out.  He had a nice apology though. No I’m in the back again. I’m coming out of turn four and my force feedback stops. Wheel turned to jelly in my hand and I don’t know what to do with myself and wreck the car. No I’m dead last for five minutes damage just riding around getting lapped and somebody goes on the high side of me and dumps me end of the wall. This was after a drive-through penalty for too many incidents.
  • Greg – p2
  • Tom D – P16. Qualified 11th.  Rand in top 5 for the first half before getting involved into a crash after a restart. Got a lot of damage. I still have Sunday to look forward to.

Release Notes [Mike et all]

Here we go, the pre-release draft notes for the 2021 Season 2, with the final notes to be released after the build is officially deployed.

Build Aftermath [Greg]

Shortly after the release of the new build iRacing had an issue where you couldn’t get into practice sessions. If you registered early for a race you couldn’t get into the Open Practice, but when the race started you could get in at that time.

UMP Modified Problems [Adam]

Tanner Clawson posted in the forums that he thinks the update ruined what was a fun class to run, the UMP Modifieds. The car has no hike and is nothing like what a real Modified would be like. Tyler Hudson for iRacing replied that they’re looking to patch soon and have improvements in for this car. He just tested them and it’s back to more like it was prior to the patch but with the current car’s tire.

UMP Gets Pulled [Mike]

The UMP’s did get pulled from week 13 as announced by Tyler Hudson as the patch will not be deployed until early next week.

Bark River Bumps [Hall]

Nick Neben noticed that it appears a bump was modeled graphically on the second to last corner, but does nothing as the underlying track we drive on does not have it. So every car just drives through the mound on corner entry. Others in the forums confirmed the situation, but iRacing has yet to resolve the problem.

Season 2 Hotfix 1 [Brian]

The first hotfix was already released this morning including the late release of the McLaren 570s GT4

Late Addition the McLaren 570s GT4 [Greg]

The McLaren 540s GT4 was a part of the season 2 hotfix update.

Why in a Hotfix [Adam]

So, why was the release of the McLaren done in a hotfix and not with the build update? According to Shawn Nash at iRacing it had to do with a last minute licensing approval and came as a surprise to many of the staff as well as us.

Multiple Groove Racing ? [Mike]

Tyler Hudson explains the how the new aero model is the first step in the goal of opening up the lanes for multiple groove racing.

https://members.iracing.com/jforum/posts/list/50/3795079.page#12417324

The Bubble has Arrived [Hall]

Paul Johnson mentioned in the forums regarding the new aero package that you can’t just run wide open anymore, you have to have the guy in front back up to you by dragging the brake or you have to get a huge run to break the bubble. But the bubble feels a little strong right now. iRacing’s Eric Hudec responded that Paul is correct, and we spent a lot of time making sure what happens in the sim is what’s happening on the real cars. Cars up in the front should be roughly “stalled” behind another car and stuck against a bubble, cars in the back (or locked onto another car) should be having to lift off the throttle to keep from driving through cars in front.

Santiago Tirres also Tweeted his thanks to everyone in his box and the Norse Force Racing setup guys after the photo finish victory.

Neat Idea [Brian]

Andrew Berry posted in the forums the interesting idea that the iRacing Superspeedway should have it’s own series where the cars change every week, but the track stays the same.

https://members.iracing.com/jforum/posts/list/3795944.page#12423553

2021 iRacing Nurburgring Endurance Series [Greg]

Fantasy [Brian]

Hardware/Software

How Many Cores Do We Use Now? [Mike]

In a forum thread wondering about the amount of threads iRacing uses David Tucker mentioned on a forum thread that “now that sound is using a full thread it is possible to have 4 working very hard with our physics, graphics, particle effect, and sound threads. We also have a pile of helper threads to handle side tasks like painting cars and loading faster Having more cores for those helps but usually not when out on track”.

David = P  horrible, loaded Q set, not didn’t change, loaded Q set

Brian- P 8  Started P2 Liked this set good on long runs, but there were none.  Fighting for top 5 after late restart but was caught up in a wreck in front of me.

  • Sunday Open
    • David – p  bad, sped in pits, never got it back
  • Tom D – P11.  Was a huge up and down race. Qualified 4th.  Got spun, no yellow.  Was able to work my way back up

Rochette- P5 stayed top 8 all race late yellow killed my long run 2nd place spot with 28 to go

  • Sunday fixed
    • Mike -p 12 got wrecked lap 1 – enough damage that i was running about 30th the whole race – with late cautions and other wrecks, hung in there and got clear up to p12~!
  • Stephen – wrecked out
  • Tyler – P 10 did not qualify but stayed clean. Longest run was early at about 30laps. Kept digging on late restarts and snagged a top 10. Car was super tight but the tires were still good.

Race:  Phx

  • Wed Open:
    • Hall – p9 good on long run, got to return a favor

Ellis – p6 – Had a couple of minor incidents not too much damage – but had to come from the back maybe 3 or 4 times – was as high as 4th faded a bit on the long run –

  • Thurs Open

Ellis – p – DNF – Had a good run going, running top 5 as high as 2nd – 20 something cautions it was nuts – at some point i pitted for tires after 50 laps and that put me back where i got involved in some of the wrecks – Eventually 5 to go another wreck put me out

Official Series

  • Euro Sprint
    • Hall Le Mans
      • Several P2’s
  • IMSA
    • Hall – Sebring

League / Hosted Races

  • FastTrack Sim Racing League
    • Mike- p16 – stayed out on early caution so we would have an extra set of tires, but never got the late caution to use it – last run was slick and i was sliding around losing spots.
    • Stephen – Throughput fell to unacceptable levels
    • Tom D. P9.  Good points day. Kept my nose clean during early carnage.  Got shuffled around, but I’ll take a top 10
  • Premier Race Network Cup:
    • Tom D – p3.  Qualified on the pole, my second of the year.  Fell back to 15 on start will a bad turn 1 and being way too conservative.  Was able to work my way back to top 5 and ran there the rest of the race.
  • OBRL ARCA Series
    • Brian P21 Talladega  Stayed in the back due to technical issues.  Coulda been worse
